1990 - The birthplace of Peig Sayers in Baile an Bhiocáire. Peig was the youngest of thirteen children, nine of them dying in childhood. They were a poor family but she did inherit her father's gift of story-telling. She married a Blasket Islander - Pádraig Ó Gaoithín and went to live on the Great Blasket Island for fifty years. Only six of her eleven children survived, the surviving emigrating to America. Mícheál however did return when his health started failing.
Peig dictated her life story to this son, and her command of the spoken Irish language was captured in print, with her books Peig and An Old Woman's Reflections. Her writings are regarded as classics to this day along with those of many of those written by other Blasket Islanders. Very treasured books of mine.
