1987- Somewhere south of Headford in County Galway. This is one of my favourite Irish images, although it is tinged with a profound sadness. The owner of this single-storey dwelling must have been proud of his haycock which was almost as tall as his home and occupied most of his garden area too.
This photograph also serves as a personal memorial. That day, we had mis-judged timings and were running late for the ferry home to the UK, and my former husband became fractious when I suddenly called to him to stop the car for me to take this photograph. In fact, he was rather more than annoyed ..... I grabbed the shot and we drove off, only to come across a fatal road accident a few miles further on, one that took the lives of four young people (so we learned later). We were on the scene before the emergency services arrived. A number of cars had already stopped and we so were waved through, but not before I glimpsed a site I never wish to see again.
