2003 - Dunquin (Dun Chaoin). A naomhóg, a boat which is canvas-covered and tarred, generally about nine metres in length. The prow of the boat can hold a small mast for a sail. Considering how treacherous the waters are in this area off the Dingle Peninsula, it's not surprising that Blasket islanders would frequently be unable to get to the mainland, that is before they were evacuated in the 1950s.
It also meant that those waiting to take provisions out to the islands were often delayed by high seas. At one time, these boats were covered with animal skins. Photographs exist of cattle being transported one at a time in a naomhóg between the Blasket Islands and the mainland at Dunquin.
